Holiday Crime Prevention Tips
'Tis the season to be jolly, but it is also the season to be wary of burglars, thieves, and other holiday grinches ? and nothing can ruin the Christmas spirit faster than becoming the victim of a crime.
Unfortunately, burglars view the holiday season a little differently?for them, it is a time of opportunity to burglarize your home for cash, credit cards, and gifts. The following are a few strategies that will help you protect your home and enjoy the holidays without incident:
- Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave your house or apartment, even for a few minutes.
- Don?t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the front window so it's easily visible from the street. It's too tempting for a potential criminal to smash the window and grab the wrapped packages or plan a later break-in based on their earlier observation.
- Don?t advertise ?Burglars look for occupancy cues like outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up newspapers, mail, or advertising flyers hanging on the doorknob.
- If you?re leaving town for the holidays, add your residence to the Department's House Watch list. Register online at http://bit.ly/SAPDHouseWatch or call the SAPD's Desk Duty Officer at (325) 481-2696.
- Don?t leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like, ?You?ve reached the Wilson's?we?re away skiing for the Christmas holidays?please leave a message.? Bad guys love to hear that they have plenty of time to break in and completely ransack your home.
- Use an inexpensive light timer when you are away and ask a neighbor to pick up your newspapers and mail.
- If you go out for the evening, turn on lights and a radio or television so the house or apartment appears to be occupied.
- Burglars know to look for the hidden door key near the front entrance. Don?t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead, give the spare key to a trusted neighbor.
- Burglars prefer to enter through unlocked doors or windows. A holiday problem can occur when exterior Christmas light extension cords are run inside through a window and prevent it from being secured.
- After Christmas day, don?t pile up empty gift boxes from your new computer, DVD player, or stereo receiver on the street for the garbage man. Burglars appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. Break the boxes down or cut them up and conceal the items in dark-colored lawn bags, then wait to discard them in your recycling bin until your trash pickup day.

Press Release #122115(08)-Police Investigate Shooting Incident in Northeast San Angelo

The San Angelo Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division is investigating a shooting that took place this morning in northeast San Angelo.
Just before 3:00 a.m. this morning, Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Velma Street for the report of shots fired. Upon arrival, police were directed to a residence in the 1700 block of Pope Street where they located a 37-year-old man lying on the ground, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the chest and arm. Officers at the scene provided first aid to the victim until San Angelo Fire Department Medics arrived and transported him to Shannon Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery. His condition is unknown at this time.
Through a combined effort of the Criminal Investigations Division, Special Operations Section, Narcotics, Patrol, Crime Scene Investigations, and the Department's Crime Analysis Unit, Otis Layne Babb (DOB 05-02-83) of Eldorado, Texas was identified as the suspect and a warrant was obtained for his arrest. Babb was located late this afternoon at an undisclosed location and taken into custody without incident. The firearm used in the assault has been recovered.
Babb was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and transported to the Tom Green County Jail.
The victim's name is not being released at this time. The relationship between the victim and Babb and the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation. There is no further information at this time.

Press Release 121815(07)-Man Arrested for Trying to Take Gun from Officer

Today at 1:41 pm, Officers responded to a call at the Nevada East Apartments, 1645 Sunset Drive, for a suspicious person. Officer R Spearman and Officer E Tabone arrived and located 30 year old Shawn Sanchez.
Officer Spearman was able to confirm Sanchez had outstanding warrants. Officer Spearman attempted to place Sanchez under arrest for the warrants. When Officer Spearman tried to place handcuffs on Sanchez, he began to resist and fight with Officer Spearman. During the struggle, Sanchez attempted to remove Officer Spearman's duty weapon from its holster. Officer Spearman was able to prevent Sanchez from being able to fully gain control of the gun while Officer Tabone deployed his taser on Sanchez to prevent him from getting access to Officer Spearman's weapon. The Officers were able to take Sanchez into custody.
Detective Elrod and Detective Lajoie responded to investigate the incident. Sanchez was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. At the conclusion of the initial investigation, Sanchez was charged with the outstanding warrants, Resisting Arrest, and Attempting to Take a Weapon from a Peace Officer, a State Jail Felony.
Investigators are looking into the possibility that Sanchez was the driver of a stolen vehicle that crashed in the 1600 block of Sunset Drive earlier this morning. That portion of the investigation is still ongoing and there is no other information available for release at this time.
Press Release #121815(06)-Police Investigate Aggravated Assault

Yesterday, December 17, 2015 at approximately 12:00 pm, San Angelo Police responded to the Econolodge, 415 W Beauregard, for a shots fired call. Officers located a male subject, Justin McCarty, in the area who had been the victim of an assault. Officers also located another victim, Cheyenne Ponce, and a female witness in the area.
The assault took place in room 116 at the Econolodge. Evidence of gunshots being fired in the room was located by the investigating Officers. Members of the Criminal Investigation Division responded to the motel to investigate.
Ponce reported to investigators she had been choked by a white male suspect and had a handgun pointed at her by a Hispanic male suspect. During the altercation, the Hispanic male fired the handgun in the room and chased McCarty out of the room. No one was injured from the shots being fired. McCarty showed signs of being physically assaulted and was treated for minor injuries at Shannon Medical Center.
The two suspects were seen leaving the area in a white 2002 Mazda passenger car. The suspects have not been located at this time.
Detective Noel Anderson is the lead investigator for this case. If anyone has any information about this incident Detective Anderson can be contacted at 657-4344. There is no other information available for release at this time.
Press Release #121415(06)-Missing Juvenile Briana Esquivel Returned, Safe

San Angelo Missing Juvenile Briana Esquivel has returned and is safe. On Friday, December 11, 2015, San Angelo Police received a call from Esquivel's father who reported the teen returned home. SAPD Investigators subsequently interviewed Esquivel and confirmed she was unharmed.
Esquivel was reported missing on January 21, 2015. Foul play was not suspected and evidence throughout the investigation led police to believe Esquivel was a runaway.
