Teen Hit and Run Driver Apprehended after Foot Pursuit
May 11, 2020   04:28 PM

May 11, 2020 — Just after 2:30 p.m., San Angelo Police were dispatched to the area of West Harris and South Abe Street for the report of a gray 2005 Toyota passenger car who was fleeing the scene of a crash.

While en route, officers received information that the suspect had pulled into the Shell Gas Station on South Abe Street after the vehicle became disabled.  Once in the parking lot, the suspect driver reportedly exited the car and fled on foot.

A responding officer located the suspect driver and attempted to stop him but the suspect driver disregarded commands and a foot pursuit ensued.  The suspect driver was eventually taken into custody in a parking lot near the 400 block of West Beauregard.

During the follow-up investigation, police learned the suspect driver, identified as 17-year-old Adan Gonzalez, had rear-ended a white Dodge Ram pickup that had been stopped at the light on South Abe and West Harris.  When the driver of the Dodge, a 22-year-old San Angelo man, made contact with Gonzalez, Gonzalez reportedly told the man not to call the police and then fled the area.  The victim, who was not injured during the crash, followed Gonzalez to the Shell Station.

Gonzalez was initially charged with Evading Arrest Detention but was additionally charged with Possession of Marijuana after police found marijuana inside the vehicle.

Gonzalez also received citations for Failure to Control Speed, No Driver’s License, and Failure to Stop and Leave Information.

Police Memorial Week Events Canceled Due to COVID-19 Emergency Declaration
May 11, 2020   09:29 AM

Every year, the dedicated men and women of the San Angelo Police Department host Police Memorial Week Events to honor the courageous men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives.

It is with great regret that the San Angelo Police Department will be unable to host our traditional events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  This decision was a difficult one, but we believe it is the right one.  We are saddened that our community and partner agencies cannot come together this year to grieve the loss of the officers who were killed in the line of duty in 2019, but given the national crisis, we must continue to make the safety of the public our first priority.

This week, the Department will release a Police Memorial Week Video in lieu of our Annual Flag Raising Ceremony.  The video will be published to the Department’s Facebook and Twitter pages, facebook.com/SanAngeloPoliceDepartment and twitter.com/SanAngeloPolice.

For more information about line of duty deaths by state and year visit odmp.org.  For a list of fallen officers from the COVID-19 pandemic visit https://www.odmp.org/search/incident/covid-19.  To register to watch the National Police Week Virtual Candlelight Vigil visit https://bit.ly/2020VirtualCandlelightVigilReg

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Memorial Week.

Since 1776, there have been 24,223 known line of duty deaths in America – 72 this year and 146 in 2019.
