San Angelo Police Officer arrested by DPS, charged with DWI during Traffic Stop

Just after 12:56 a.m. on Friday, July 4, 2024, San Angelo Police Detective James Hernandez was booked into the Tom Green County Jail for Driving While Intoxicated 2^nd by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

A Trooper with the Texas DPS conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was being driven by Det. Hernandez which resulted in the arrest of 54-year-old for the charge of Driving While Intoxicated 2^nd.  Further inquiries regarding the arrest should be directed to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Subsequent to this arrest, the San Angelo Police Department has opened a formal internal investigation with the Office of Professional Standards.

Hernandez, a seventeen-year veteran of the San Angelo Police Department, was off duty when the incident occurred.
