  • Press Release #091415(11)-Man Arrested for Weekend Burglary, Deadly Conduct in San Angelo

    Mon, Sep 14, 2015 - 01:41 PM

A well-dressed 41-year-old man was arrested Saturday night after he burglarized a residence and shot a vehicle parked in a neighboring garage.

Just before 9:45 p.m. on September 12, 2015, San Angelo Police were dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of Loganwood Drive for the report of shots fired by an armed man wearing a dark suit.  While enroute, Officers learned the armed man had also fired a handgun towards a neighboring garage.

First to arrive on scene, Officer R. Espinoza observed a man wearing a dark suit leaving a residence with a suitcase.  The man was taken into custody at gunpoint without incident.  Believing the man was in the process of burglarizing the home, Officer Espinoza requested additional Officers to the scene.  A perimeter of the property was quickly established and a team of Officers searched the house and the surrounding area for additional suspects but no one was located.  It was later determined the subject, identified as Miguel Hernandez Tapia (DOB 07-28-74) of Kansas, had burglarized the home and was in the process of removing property when Officer Espinoza arrived.  While processing the scene for evidence, police and Crime Scene Investigations located a handgun and spent shell casings inside the garage, multiple bullet holes inside the living area of the house, and recovered property belonging to the homeowner inside Tapia's clothing.

Police also recovered the bullet Tapia shot towards the neighbor's garage.  It was located embedded inside the vehicle owner's manual, which was in the vehicle's glove box.   The neighbor told police he called 9-1-1 after discovering Tapia standing in his neighbor's driveway, armed with a handgun.  No injuries were reported.

Police were dispatched to the residence earlier that evening for an active burglar alarm, but found no sign of forced entry.  The homeowner could not be located at the time of the response.  Investigators believe Tapia may have entered through an unsecured overhead garage door and locked the doors once inside.

San Angelo Fire Department Personnel and AEP representatives also responded to the scene to address a gas leak inside the residence that occurred when a bullet struck a gas line located in the ceiling.

Tapia was transported to the Tom Green County Jail without incident.  Detective Jason Chegwidden is the lead Investigator for this case.

There is no other information at this time.
