On Saturday, March 9, 2013, at approximately 7:35 p.m., San Angelo Police and Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the 5300 block of Christoval Road for the report of a major motor vehicle crash involving a pickup truck and a motorcycle.
Upon arrival, officers found a 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck disabled in front of the Party Ranch bar in the southbound lane of Christoval Road with a 2012 Victory motorcycle wedged underneath it. The driver of the motorcycle was also located partially underneath the truck. San Angelo Fire Department personnel rendered aid to the man however he died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Justice of the Peace Kay Longest was called to the scene to formally pronounce the death. The victim was later identified as 28 year-old Donald Di Pietro.
Preliminary investigation into the incident shows the operator of the truck placed his vehicle in the roadway, without lights, before the motorcycle collided with it. Evidence collected from the scene indicates Di Pietro applied his breaks approximately 80 feet prior to the collision before falling onto the left side and eventually colliding with the truck. Portions of Christoval Road were closed to traffic for several hours due to the investigation.
The operator of the truck, identified as Malcolm Guy McBurnett (DOB 01-08-48) of San Angelo, was reportedly uninjured as a result of the crash. Officers at the scene found probable cause to believe McBurnett was intoxicated at the time of the collision and a mandatory blood specimen was obtained from McBurnett at a nearby hospital.
