SAPD Canine Duke Sniffs Out Meth during Traffic Stop

Just before 9:30 p.m. last night, San Angelo Police conducted a traffic stop on a blue, 2001 Ford Mustang in the 200 block of W. 14th Street.

During the stop, K-9 Officer F. Flores deployed Police Service Dog Duke to conduct an open-air sniff around the vehicle.  During the sniff, Duke alerted Officers to the presence of narcotics.

During a probable cause search of the vehicle and occupants, one of the passengers resisted and attempted to run.  The passenger, who initially gave Officers a false name and date of birth, was eventually identified as Paul N. Villanueva, 37, of Mertzon, Texas.  Villanueva was in possession of marijuana and a small amount of suspected narcotics that field-tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine.

Villanueva was charged with State Jail Felony Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, Class B Possession of Marijuana, Resist Arrest Search or Transport, Fail to Identify Giving False Fictitious Information, Possession/Delivery Drug Paraphernalia, and a warrant for Parole Violation.

Another passenger, Carmel Mata, 30, was arrested for warrants.  The driver was released at the conclusion of the field investigation.
