San Angelo Police Investigate Fatal Crash at Arden, Sherwood Way

***Update to previous release: The victim was identified as Darren J. Martinez***

July 10, 2018 — The San Angelo Police Department’s Motors Section is investigating a fatality crash that occurred early this morning at the intersection of Arden Road and Sherwood Way.

Police were dispatched to the scene shortly after 3:00 a.m. First responders located the driver, a 17-year-old San Angelo resident, deceased.  Justice of the Peace Susan Werner responded to the scene and formally pronounced the teen dead due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The preliminary crash investigation revealed the victim was traveling westbound on Avenue N. towards Sherwood Way at a high rate of speed when his 2007 Dodge 3500 pickup truck left the roadway and collided with the Napa Auto Parts in-ground sign near the 3200 block of Arden Road.  After colliding with the sign, the truck continued into a parked, unoccupied Napa Auto Parts company truck.  That collision caused a chain reaction which led to three additional Napa trucks to become damaged before the victim’s truck came to rest on its driver’s side.  The victim was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Volunteers with San Angelo REACT assisted Officers during the investigation by blocking traffic at the intersection.  Traffic is expected to be diverted away from the area for several hours.

This is an ongoing investigation and additional information will be released when it becomes available.

The victim’s name is not being released at this time.
