Police Renew Plea for Tips on Anniversary of the Dovie Dykes Cold Case Murder

31 years to the day after an 83-year-old San Angelo woman was sexually assaulted, beaten and left for dead, her assailant(s) remains unidentified.  The San Angelo Police Department’s Cold Case Section wants to change that.

On the morning of July 11, 1986, San Angelo Police were dispatched to 1026 Culberson Street for the report of a deceased person, identified as Dovie Dykes.

Her body was found inside the residence by her niece, Belle Guess.  Guess told Police that Dykes had recently expressed a concern for her own safety and that she felt a man in the neighborhood was going to “get her or rape her”.

A subsequent criminal investigation by Detectives revealed that Dykes had been sexually assaulted by one or more suspects who forced their way into her home.  It is also believed that several personal items were removed from the residence by the assailant(s).  Autopsy results concluded that Dykes died as a result of cardiac arrhythmia she experienced during the assault.  Law enforcement is seeking information regarding who may have visited or seen Dykes during the afternoon or evening hours of July 10 through the early morning hours of July 11, 1986.  Law enforcement is also seeking information from anyone who may have seen a person or persons walking around Dykes’s residence in the days leading up to July 11, 1986.

Please, help us find justice for Dovie Dykes.  If you have any information about this case please contact SAPD Cold Case Detective Jim Coleman at (325) 657-4532 or 277-4503 or email coldcase@sanangelopolice.org.  To remain anonymous, call the SAPD 24 Tip hotline at 1-855-TIPS-247.  You can also text your tips- text TIP SAPD plus your tip information to 888777 and follow the prompts.  You can submit tips online at: http://local.nixle.com/tip/san-angelo-police-department/.
