Major Crash on Houston Harte Expressway

At approximately 4:20 p.m. this afternoon, San Angelo Police were dispatched to the 4400 block of the West Houston Harte Expressway, westbound, for the report of a major motor vehicle crash with entrapment.

Officers arrived and located a two-vehicle crash involving a white 1993 Buick Century and a black 2010 Jeep Laredo.

The driver of the Buick, a 21year-old pregnant female, had to be extricated from the vehicle.  She was transported to a nearby hospital where she later underwent surgery for incapacitating injuries.  A 24-year-old female passenger and an unrestrained 7-month-old infant were also transported to a nearby hospital.  The uninjured infant was evaluated and subsequently released.  The passenger was treated for non-incapacitating injuries and was later released.  The driver of the Jeep, a 17-year-old female, and two juvenile passengers, ages 9 and 8, were not injured.  The occupants of the Jeep were all restrained.

A preliminary investigation revealed the Buick was disabled in the coned-off section of the highway prior to the crash when it unsafely entered into oncoming traffic and collided with Jeep.

Investigators with the Department’s Traffic Section responded along with Crime Scene Investigations.   Westbound traffic was diverted  off at the Mertzon Highway exit onto the frontage road for several hours during the investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation.
