The San Angelo Police Department has an authorized strength of 180 sworn officers and 33 non-sworn support personnel. The department handles an average of 100,130 calls from citizens for police service every year.  To maintain the highest level of efficiency, we incorporate state of the art equipment with on-going training programs.

    • Officers begin receiving Educational Incentive Pay after completion of their Probationary Period
    • Officers receive $300 per month for Bachelor's Degree
    • Officers receive $400 per month for Master's Degree
  • Special Duty Pay
    • $350.00 per month PTO stipend
    • Members of the SWAT team, Hostage Negotiations Team receive $100 per month
    • Bilingual Officers receive $100 per month for bilingual pay
  • Eligible for dental and vision insurance at employee’s expense

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED 
    • (if GED graduate, 12 college credit hours are required.)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Twenty-one to forty-five years of age 
    • (no military service or college degree is required)
  • Eighteen to twenty-one years of age
    • two years prior military service or sixty semester hours of college credit is required
  • Must be of good moral character
  • Must be in good physical condition
  • Must have uncorrected vision of 20/200 or better in each eye correctable to 20/30 in each eye
  • Must pass a civil service written exam
  • Must not have been convicted of a Class A criminal offense or greater or have a history of criminal or improper conduct
  • Must not have been convicted of a Class B criminal offense within the past 10 years prior to application
  • Must not have a poor driving record
  • If prior military, must have an honorable discharge or a discharge under honorable conditions
  • Must pass a medical and psychological examination 

 

The Hiring Process

The hiring process begins by completing an application for employment with the City of San Angelo.  Applicants must complete the following steps as part of the hiring process: 

  • Written Civil Service Exam (applicants must pass with a score of at least 70% to proceed to the next step)
  • Physical Agility Test  (see Recruiting-Testing Dates for more information)
  • Detailed Personal History Statement
  • Background Investigation to include Polygraph Examination
  • Oral Interview Board
  • Psychological Examination
  • Medical Examination

Candidates are selected from a field of applicants that have passed a written civil service exam, physical agility test, a thorough background investigation, and an intense oral interview.  Successful applicants will be hired as a police recruit and attend a rigorous and demanding six-month basic peace officer course held at the Tom Flowers Law Enforcement Training Center.  After graduating from the academy and passing a state certification exam, trainees will become probationary police officers. 

Probationary Police Officers will then attend additional in-service training of a period of time that is dependent on departmental needs and an eighteen -week Field Training Program before being assigned to one of six patrol shifts. 


 Specialized Assignments/Units:


Officers are eligible to apply for openings in specialized units after completing two years of service with the department

Criminal Investigations, Traffic Section, Street Crimes Division, K-9, SWAT, Crisis Negotiations, Training, Recruiting, Crime Prevention, DREAM,  Anti-Crime Unit, Honor Guard

About San Angelo

San Angelo is located on the plains of west-central Texas at the confluence of the North and South Concho Rivers. The city grew up around Fort Concho which was built in 1867 and is now preserved as a National Historic Landmark.  Once the frontier was secured, the land around San Angelo was settled by ranchers and farmers and even today retains a spirit of hardy independence and open friendliness.  San Angelo covers 58.61 square miles and has a population of approximately 100,000 people.  It is home to Angelo State University, Goodfellow Air Force Base, and is a sought after retirement location.
